Lake Leon, Lake Proctor and the Palo Pinto Creek Reservoir are all a short drive out if you are staying more than a night and want water. Ranger itself is a small town with a genuinely outsized history: the McCleskey No. 1 came in here on the nineteenth of October 1917 and set off one of the largest oil booms Texas has ever seen, briefly turning a farming community of a few hundred into a town of about thirty thousand people living in tents.
